[ the kingdom of kou is, unfortunately, the kind that likes to conquer people. they're pretty big on expanding their territory, although they at least choose to be diplomatic at first before resorting to the whole attacking thing. so, when news broke out that the ripple kingdom was weakening, kou swooped in. with their king dying and a bastard son next in line, ripple seemed perfect. however, they were located far enough from kou that the most convenient way to to take the kingdom was by legitimate means. as in, marriage. when prince kouen, the heir of kou, suggested that they join their kingdoms by an arranged marriage, the offer was readily accepted.
unsurprisingly, when kouen went to his younger sister, kougyoku, about the arrangement, she was less than thrilled. however, she, like her other siblings, was fiercely loyal to her kingdom, so she agreed. having to get married to a complete stranger was terrible, but at least it was for the good of her people.
the wedding was to take place in ripple. kougyoku's party arrived a few days before the wedding date, a little later than initially planned because of complications on the journey. when the ripple court welcomed her arrival, it was a very quick affair as her entourage wanted to rest up after such a weary ride. kougyoku wasn't even able to be introduced to her new husband. it was very annoying.
now: after a quick nap, she manages to sneak away from her attendants to walk around the castle. if this is going to be her new home, then she might as well look around before she gets the official (biased) tour. the more she wanders, the more she dreads this. she hadn't been around the prince long enough to really get a good look at him, but they did send her his portrait right after this arrangement had been made. she almost threw it out a window; he looked so mean. still, duty trumps personal feelings, so she has to go through with this.
hopefully she won't run into him now. ]
